Home as a Vessel: Creating Space for Abundance
A few years ago I interviewed a Feng Shui Practitioner on my podcast, and one of the things she said that stuck with me is that our homes are living, breathing vision boards for our lives.
From the art we put on the walls, to what we do - or do not - make room for in our homes. It all communicates how we feel about ourselves and what we believe we are worthy of. It makes sense — our unconscious mind picks up cues from our surroundings and when our space reflects scarcity or stagnation, we feel stuck; but when it reflects intention, we feel empowered. And while the practice of Feng Shui has known this, the newly forming field of neuroaesthetics is now backing it with science.

A few things to keep in mind, energetically:
The Law of Vacuum: 2026 is a 1 Year, and the most powerful thing you can do is create a void. If every drawer and shelf is full, there is no room for new opportunities and ideas to arrive. I’ve been feeling this personally — feeling the deeper, soul-level urge to make space and clear out what has long expired. 1 energy is pure potential, so instead of trying to have everything figured out, I’m noticing myself having a lot more curiosity for who I am becoming. I’ve been using “I don’t know” and being okay with that, a lot more in my life when it comes to the bigger questions I used to want answers to.
Ask yourself, what’s missing?: One of the deeper realizations I’ve had over the past few years is how little of me there was left in my life after becoming a mom. It’s interesting to observe, to see how when family and children came into my life, I minimized my needs and shrunk myself into not existing. Between care tasks and toys, I stopped prioritizing beauty and standards. Not only this, but there was no designated workspace for me in our home. I chalked it up to ‘being able to work anywhere’ or telling myself that my dining table was ‘good enough’, but what not having a designated workspace was actually saying was: ‘my work is not important’, ‘I do not matter’, ‘everyone else comes first.’

Signs of scarcity: There is a quote that says “poverty isn’t empty pockets, it’s a house filled with ‘maybe one day’, and ‘I’ll keep it… just incase.” I consider myself somewhat of a minimalist, I thrive in clean, clear environments, but I also have a really difficult time getting rid of items because I can’t stand the thought of our landfills. What’s helped me is thinking about a circular society, and imagining the new life a item will have after it’s passed along. Just the other day I had this thought about baby items. I read how important it is in Feng Shui to release baby items from your home so that your children can grow up. But, I had a difficult time doing it! I had said to my partner — I just wish I knew someone who could really use them. Within minutes I saw a post on social media, someone was collecting gently used baby items for a young mom in the area. It made me so happy to know the items my babies used and loved were going to get a new life and help another family out!
We can’t always know where our items go when we donate, and that’s part of the magic. But it is nice to remember how connected we all are, and to send out prayers that items find their perfect home when released from yours.
The Narrative of Your Art: The unconscious mind speaks in visuals, which is why vision boards are powerful. This is also why it’s important to be aware of what story you’re telling through the art on your walls.
One of the ways I felt trapped in my first pregnancy was because I felt I could never produce enough milk to pump and leave my partner with a bottle. For my second pregnancy I decided I was going to have an oversupply so that I could have more freedom. Not surprising, during that second pregnancy I came across a piece of art that depicted a surplus of milk.
Areas to prioritize
1 — where you get ready for the day
2025 was the year I found my voice again. There were lots of synchroiticies, but one of them was finding this plate at an auction. It’s a little bird, to me, a Robin, and I use it to hold jewellery. Birds and birdsong are healing to the throat chakra and are symbolic of having a voice and sharing your message. Seeing this little bird every day when getting ready feels healing to me — a reminder that my voice does matter. In this corner of the house I also have a starfish ornament given to us at our wedding next to the beach, a photo of my pup’s mama, a photo of the gardens where I spent a lot of time in the early days of my blog, and some stones.
2 — where you go to sleep
One of the ways to begin reclaiming your power and settling your nervous system is with a relaxing bed and bedtime routine. One thing I am actively doing is saying a hard no to down-filled pillows and duvets. (And jackets, etc). Feathered items are outdated and there are so many ways to bring beauty into your home without harming animals. I also plan to make my own lavender linen spray and edited through the books on my nightstand. Having a totem or symbol for the life you’re creating by your bedside is also really special.
3 — the entry way
In Feng Shui, your entry way is considered the ‘mouth’ or gateway into the home, and I’ve learned that it’s important to keep it organized and welcoming to invite in opportunities. Leaving and coming home with two small children can be a battle, and I’ve found myself feeling panicked at times during those transitions. To help, we are tackling functionality. I want to feel cozy when I come home!
There are other areas of our home that we are working on, but for now prioritizing these spaces — cleaning them, editing them and making a plan for small improvements in them feels like the perfect way to begin a new year.
How do you feel in your home? Does it feel like the environment supports you, or are there small changes you can make so that your home better reflects who you are — or better yet, who you are becoming now? Later this month I am having my home cleared by a local energy worker, I’ll be sure to update you on that process and how it goes!
