Saving the Butterflies (Vintage Wallpaper to Digital Art)

The Inspiration

I’ve always loved finding beauty in unexpected places. When I came across this vintage wallpaper, it was on its way to the landfill. There was something so special about the way the butterflies were stencilled onto the paper, and I knew I needed to reuse the paper somehow.

The Process

In my first (!) YouTube video I take you behind the scenes of how I salvaged these butterflies from the original wall paper hidden behind decade old wall panelling. It was a slow, meditative process of cutting, scanning, and digitally restoring them to ensure they kept their crafted charm, while also being a piece of art you might want to have in your home.

What’s really special about this project - is the sentiment behind saving the butterflies. Since moving into our home, I’ve been trying to better understand how to use spaces like our garden to give back to nature, rather than just take-from. The prints are a reminder of our impact - how small choices - planting a butterfly friendly flower or saving an old piece of wallpaper - actually do impact the world around us.
